This has to be the best of the cool shoulder bags so far. I just love it. The color and the motif carry such story. I would imagine an English lady exploring our tropical jungle. Much like Jane in Tarzan but no. More like Julia Roberts, although she's American, but the like of her .. maybe Julie Andrews.

The print shows three species of Heliconia. I only recognize one, the false bird-of-paradise, at lower right. The center red piece I think is a small plant. The one of the left although it looks like orchid the leaves shows that it is not. I grow a few species of Heliconia. One is the lobster claw.

Cool Shades Pouch

What a cool project this turned out to be. Originally a request by a beautiful young lady, who had dropped by Choqlat at Plaza Gambut, Kuantan, with her cute friend, I've searched the internet for good design and tutorial for tie pouch for sunglassess. Found this one and before you know it I've made a couple of these.

The batik fabrics used are remnants from past projects; used for both the outer piece as well as the inner peace. So the pouch is well lined and snugly tied at the open end. Here for the ties I use round elastic ties. Sunglasses fits well inside one of these.

We, my daughter and I, got some fabulous new fabrics today for cool shoulder bag. This one in particular when finished she said would pass for Nike Cool Shoulder Bag. Wouldn't that be cool if Nike endorsed this bag.

Fabulous green with soft fern prints would be gorgeous for sporty event. Matched with dark plain green I'd be happy to make a few more of this.

"Like a Cheetah" Print Batik Cool Shoulder Bag

Being a batik lover, I just had to work on a batik project now and then. So here's my cool shoulder bag in "like a cheetah" print. Here, it's matched with a black lining. As usual, this bag is reversible so wear in batik on one day and mysteriously black on another.

After RM70, today I've completed a few cool shoulder bag and some half moon bag. The fabrics have been pre-cut at hanging on my working chair for quite some time, so here some the pics. And of course, these are available for grabs.

Batik Chocolate Box

Conceptualizing a chocolate box out of batik.

This is the outcome of my first try at materializing the sewing crafted chocolate box. So the box is just a simple rectangular box with flip lid. It is fitted with a four by two chocolate tray. So it fits eight pralines or truffles just nicely.

Here the chocolate model is the flat round dark peppermint filled chocolate I did for Hazem's 16th birthday. A nice thank you satin ribbon for added embellishment.

Batik Table Runner

I'm not much of a frills type of person but following a request I have done this batik table runner with some decorative ends.

The batik is my favorite Sarung Batik Terengganu in red .. it has such a strong commercial touch yet depicts the vibrant spirit of Melayu.

Making use of the two available designs from the sarung I have done the back motif for one side and the body design for the other side. As the length of the runner is more than one and a half meter the side borders are made use to emphasize geometric design. A beautiful bead tassel with a little decorative copper like leave dangles at both ends of the runner providing weight and aesthetic feature.

Hope it is acceptable by you Mr. Lim.

Throw Cushion

Trust on throw cushions to soften and brighten any room. Mix solids and prints for a cheerful look. Add trims and accessories just for the look your looking for.

Here I've made some throw cushion covers from my favourite Batik Terengganu. It is just so glorious and I love it. The covers are simple to make. No zippers were used therefore they are child safe. They have overlapping back just like your pillow covers so they are easy to put on and taken off for washing.

Today begins the season of Hajj. Malaysian first group of 300 to be Hajjahs and Hajis arrived safely in Madinah. Soon millions of Muslim will pack Meccah and Madinah awaiting for the day of Wukuf. There is no Haji without Wukuf at Arafah according to a tradition from Rasulullah SAW. Come the day for Wukuf at Arafah, we muslims in our own countries are encourage to fast. We will later celebrate Eidul Hajj the next day when the pilgrams throw stones at the Jamarul Aqaba symbolizing self cleansing. And it is the day for Korban.

This post is to show off a recently completed table cloth from our Sarung Batik Terengganu. This table cloths is for eight seating and so it is quite a large one. It will later sits in Australia.

Round, Red and Ridiculously Hot Table Cloth

A table is truly a plain object. Photography of plain object I find is very challenging. On sewing craft I have done a few beautiful table cloths out of Batik Terengganu but to show it off herein this blog, the photography just doesn't do them justice. Under indoor lighting and not so good camera setting, the visibility of both my beautiful work and the beautiful batik artwork did not project themselves.

So, to bring out the most of this recently completed batik table cloth for my foreign customer I've decided to take the table cloth out of the dining room setting and out in the gardens for my photography shoot. Now, enjoy and feast your eyes on the strikingly red round table cloth amidst my Misai Kucing plant, Kembang Pagi flowers and on my drying line.

The piece I'm sharing today is similar to the first round table cloth I did earlier. This piece is made out of four batik sarungs. The table cloth is cut out from the main body of the sarungs. While the napkins were cut out from the head of the sarungs. The pieces for the table cloth were laboriously put together like a four cut cake cutting. This way gives more accuracy to get the points together than my previous effort of working with eight pieces. The result is just truly lovely and breathtaking.

Sulam Forever

And I thought those days are gone. When tudung bawal bersulam tangan or just tudung bawal would no longer be worn. With the tudung segera over flooding the tudung market in Malaysia, or Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, the square voile scarf is less favoured by local Muslim ladies.

Even if chiffon long scarf is still favoured among teenagers as per the wearing by Yuna, their elders are now favouring the earlier called tudung ekin. Well I'm happy that in the midst of all the bright colored Lycra instant scarf, my service is sought after.

Here I'm starting with simple design using basic stitches for a suttle decorative for the instant scarf. A new twist to the tudung here the fabric used is velvet and it's only for the awning. The tudung body will still be Lycra.

Purple Galore

This ready to wear kurung is said to be too dark purple once worn. So the owner needs some light colored beading to lighten the dress to be worn with light purple scarf.

The request started from just a simple line, to two lines to three lines. In beading and color selection three tones of purple shades were chosen and some flower sequins in there matching tones. I thought it would delightful to use the different purple tones beads and sequins for this plain jacquard purple dress.

However, time does not permit I just had to finished it off with just one pinkish line. Should the owner wish for me to continue after Raya then I will pick it up then. For now, I had to sign off for Balik Kampung.

I wonder whose dress this is. The material is pretty common to me but the request for beading is quiet extravagant. My job was to bead around the neckline and sleeve ends. The bead design should follow the abstract geometric design on the fabric. The area to bead is quiet large for me so it has taken me quiet a while to finish this project. I started to work around the neckline randomly choosing the geometric design in one matching color. Then switch to another motif with another color. I ended up using three colors that match the colors of the fabric. Brown, orange and gold Japanese Glass Beads are used and the resulting dress fits a VIP.

Round Batik Table Cloth and Napkins

This project turns four batik sarung pieces into a round table cloth for six with matching square napkins. Since the requirement is for a 72" diameter round piece I had to piece the body of the sarungs together.

Here there is a total of eight pizza shape pieces, two from each sarung, sewn sharp ends together. Then from the sarung head, I got eight square napkins, two from each sarung head.

As I don't have a round dining table to test this table cloth on just use your imagination to see the piece. It's like a very large pizza sliced into eight - matching motifs at opposite sides.

"Would you like to have a cuppa honey!"

Nothing like a hot sweet tea with peppermint to have with freshly baked muffins! Hmmm.

P.S. Excuse the overall dark appearance of the photos. Placing the folded napkins on the table cloth for close up shoot was a mistake. Should have just used white background. Anyways .. enjoy. Especially you Norlin!! Muuah.

Haven't done any sewing this May. This one was done earlier just haven't had the time to upload. Actually haven't had the mood. First my Nokia PC Suite, that's the software I use to multiple upload photos from my phone cannot connect to the phone; so I had to upload photos one by one! Then my laptop went kaput on me. Now everything technical is ok except that I'm still not in the mood for sewing.

Authentic Terengganu Colors

Many that comment on Batik Terengganu said the colors are nice, bright and modern. This yellow on brown isn't my favourite from the many colors available. For that reason I chose it to make this pair of Cool Shoulder Bag and many tissue pockets. It's kind of rustic and depicts the hard living of fishermen in Terengganu. Very authentic colors.

It reminds me of wooden fishing boats with colorful decorated front mast and simple fishing tools the men use for their daily fishing work.

They would push out their boats early in the morning and work hard all day under the hot sun on the bubbling ocean to earn their living.

All praises to Allah for our wonderful being. May He gives us guidance and perseverance to meet our daily challenges, amin.

Back to the bags, as seen in pictures, these Batik Sarung Cool Shoulder Bag are 100% reversible. You actually get two looks from one bag. One look is the iconic Batik Sarung triangular motif which is actually the back part of the sarung. The other look is the more modern look of the main body of the sarung. The fabric is cotton and cool and comfortable to wear.

Mouse Pouch

Have you seen my Fun Purse? They're really fun and funky to have. The colors are electrifying pink, blue, orange and yellow. Great to store those bits and pieces cards, bills, and notes. As much as I love my Fun Purses, when storing bulky items like a computer mouse or camera or hand phone, they are not quite there to accommodate. So in comes the Mouse Pouch!

This Mouse Pouch is the same size as my Fun Purse. Unlike the Fun Purse, the Mouse Pouch is not hard interfaced but fully lined. Here I used green Batik Terengganu for the outside fabric; and the inside fabric is just plain green. Matching green zippers, end tabs and wrist holder for easy handling.

As the pouch is not interfaced, it is soft and flexible; and very convenient to hold bulky or odd shaped items. It's great for my computer mouse and camera. I am HAPPY!

Next I'm gonna make a laptop cover or sleeve of similar concept to protect my laptop from scratches when slipped into laptop bags. It will also serve as dust cover when the laptop is not in use. I have uncovered too much already of my next project. See you there!!

Sour Plum Bag Set

So I'm on a streak here. Three days in a row, three bag sets back to back.

The story is like this, I was off to my favourite fabric outlet wanting to get dark warm plain chocolate fabric to match with a turquoise blue on dark brown fabric for Kak Long. Temptation turns to lust, "no lah", just can't resist some of the fabrics from the normal collection I usually pick from.

Well, this bag set is of Sour Plum fabric. It is matched with burnt brick brown plain fabric for inside lining. The set comprises of Cool Shoulder Bag, Wadi Sling Bag, Makeup Purse, and Tissue Pocket.

A twist to the Cool Shoulder Bag - it has a button to hang trinket and in my case a Tissue Pocket. A twist to the Tissue Pocket is that I've made a loop to hang it on the button on the bag. This way, the tissue packet would not get crumpled amongst other things in the bag - clever ehhh. A twist to the Makeup purse, this one has a rounded edge top flap and is bigger than the earlier one I did for the OMG Set.

Pink satin pipings are used for both tie ribbon for the Makeup Purse and the edge lining for the Tissue Pocket.

Wadi Sling Bag With Cover Flap

As promised, more add on features to my bags. Simple as it may be, each successful add on is very gratifying.

Complementing my earlier O MG Cool Shoulder Bag, this Wadi Bag is of the same fabric. This vibrant green brown and white fabric is matched with a more soothing brown for the inside lining. Notice the handle is one side of the designed fabric while the other is of plain fabric. This is so when using the bag reversed, each way the handle is matched to the body.

Surprisingly, even with the flap cover, the new add on to this Wadi Sling Bag, the bag is still reversible!!

Furthermore, I've concocted a matching makeup purse with satin ribbons to enclose! Wonderful!! The makeup purse is also lined on the inside with the soft brown fabric. I'll detail this makeup purse when in my next project update .. hold on to your seats.

There you have it then, four different bags and purses to mix and match to suite the occasion. I just can't decide which bag I want for myself! They are SO cool, I want them ALL!! Don't you?

OMG Cool Shoulder Bag

OMG. I'm speechless when naming this bag or rather the fabric.

I was kinda skeptical of the result as I've matched this striking fluorescent green design with a lighter than the fabric background brown. Thought it would look electrifying with plain fluorescent green for the inside lining but alas don't have it. Don't even have fluorescent green thread to do the sewing with so I've settled with dark brown. And when finished, I just had to say "Oh My God!"

It has a matching tissue pocket with emerald green piping at edges. Cool!

Take note, I have a lot of more cool ideas to add to this cool shoulder bag. One, the inside pocket which sometimes I do and sometimes I don't. Two, inner top zipper which I have done once for Rozie's brown batik shoulder bag. Three, there are matching accessories to the bag or it's accompanying Wadi Sling Bag that are tissue pocket, fun purse etc. Four, I will do a tiny loop at the side of the tissue pocket and hang it onto a button sewn on the inside at one of the handles arm. That way, the tissue packet in its tissue pocket will be safe from being crumpled inside the bag when it is hangs safely away from the other peripherals women always carry in their bag. The phone? Oo, the phone sits in the inside side pocket which I've already explained earlier.

Dark Forest Bag Set

Tissue Pockets

I don't think ladies carry little pocket tissues anymore. Life has improved. We are encircled with fans and air-conditioning and there's free serviettes at local food outlets and restaurants. However, these are handy to have around just in case.

These tissue pockets secure those little pocket tissue avoiding early tear ups and crumple. Bright colors of our batik Terengganu with satin edges to compliment and for a serene look.

TUTORIAL:

Start with a 7" by 5 1/2" rectangular. Sew piping on both short edges. Right side up, fold to center short sides. Sew the raw edges, edges aligned, with 1/2" seam allowance. You basically have the tissue pocket done with the right side in. Turn the the tissue pocket bringing the right side out. Push corners with blunt pencil and form the rectangular tissue pocket. Voilla.

Batik Tissue Box Cover

A picture tells a lot of story. A box of tissue sits on a coffee table. How many people have seen this sight. Well mine's a bit different. There's a guitar, some take-a-way food containers, there's a red batik table cloth, remember that one, and there's the green batik tissue box cover. Cool. Even though it's kinda shabby but it's a treat for the eye. The cool green on black is really eye soothing. I used matching green satin piping for all the seam edges. Lovely.

Roomy Large Funky Bag

Roomy! Large! Funky!

Sized at 14"H x 12"W x 6"D this bag is suitable for beachwear to classroom to the mosque! Your choice on where you want to take it to. It's wide sized handle makes wear comfortable. Side pockets with elastic top are suitable for hand-phone and keys; it even fit a bottle of mineral water! Or just slip those sunglasses when not in use in it.

The bag is constructed inside out with Batik Terengganu. The side from the iconic sarung motif has two side pockets. Where the side from the floral motif is pieced with the sarung border vertically placed on the left edge of the bag. Did I mention that it's totally reversible! The bag is actually off-triangular shape. It is fully interfaced for its form. Funky.

Alphabets - Ondori Floral Embroidery

I'm feeling a bit down lately and haven't done any sewing yet. Watched Pride and Prejudice two days in a row so that's how down I am. So for the lack of sewing projects I browsed through my old posts and thought of sharing this one with everyone.

These pictures first appeared in my Sulam Sayang DIY blog so here goes...

The above design templates are the ones I used for my SULAM project which I completed last year.

The finishing on the template is good as the material is like thick cotton or like canvas. Remember, for my project I used thin fabric, burgundy japanese voille. You can do the same by just duplicating what I have done. Choose your favourite word then follow the needlework template above. For letters not available just make it up. Making up the alphabet is easy I think like the way I did M on my own. However adding suitable floral motif is another challenge.

Twin Program

Specially selected sarung batik terengganu by Rozi for a cool shoulder bag with a twist. Rozi choose this brown on black batik sarung terengganu and choose the floral side for her bag. A twist to my normal cool shoulder bag is that Rozi wants a zipper for the bag. Plus she wants the handle to be the from the sarung borders for some white on the dark bag. As a result as the first of the two bags shown.

The other bag I pieced from the kepala kain. Somehow or rather I preferred this design than the body motif for bags. On top of the contrasting white on normally dark colors of batik sarung at the kepala kain, the pattern called CORAK REBUNG is iconic to Malay kain sarung batik. The bags are sized about 18"x18" with about 20" handle. They are lined with plain black cotton fabric with inside pockets from the same fabric. And of course Rozi's bag is attached with 18" zippers across the top of the bag just below the curvatures for the handle. Hope she likes it.

Fiery Hot Shoulder Bag

This is one hot cool shoulder bag. Similar to the first few that I've made. Only this time, the shoulder attachment is not just by overlap method, but by the inside seamed method - advance technique that is. Hooray! Zihan!

To make it more exciting, I'm going to make a matching fun purse and tissue pocket to go along with this bag. Exciting eh!

This red and white fern design fabric is matched with fiery red plain fabric for the inside. It is totally reversible with a pocket on the plain red side.
I'd love this one for myself.
But of course if anybody is interested to get one I can always get the fabric replenished..
that is if it is available from my favourite fabric outlet.

Beaded Chiffon Slip-On Tudung

Slip-on tudung is worn with a smaller insider (with awning) and very convenient as you don't need to apply any brooch or clasp under your chin for your normal square scarf. Still, I think not everybody can pull off this sort of tudung.

This one of Kak Su's is of brown chiffon material. When I received it the tudung is already embellished with iron on gold studs and diamond. My task is to add a few lines of Japanese Glass Bead around the face edge and lower edge. Working with chiffon is always difficult however I just stick to the seam lap. Add some white topaz with round white beads as tiny flowers at face edge.

Sulam Sayang at Swiss Garden

For all that weren't informed of the event here's some snapshots to tell the story. Fans at Facebook would have known of this event and the outcome. Nevertheless, I'm so happy to have been invited by Swiss Garden Resort to participate in their mini fair to cater for a specific group of visitors. So with the help of Sharifah, I managed to pull together some batik bags and sarung to the fair. I'm also happy that Royal Tenun of Pahang agreed to join my booth to make my booth merrier. The feeling is great to have launch Sulam Sayang first outing at a 5-star international hotel Swiss Garden Beach Resort Kuantan. Hopefully to see you all again there sometime. Tada!

Fun Purse

I was figuring out on what to do with a bunch of 7" zippers I bought in many colors. At one time I've decided that the size is really not appropriate for any sewing craft!. Well push comes to shove, I do not want to waste the zippers, so I made these 7" by 5" purses, for all purpose storage.

I like the result. The fabric here as you can see is bright electrifying blue! But I dared myself to match it with a sour red zipper! And ta da! Fun purses. It fits some cool loose stuff normally in hand bag. And the flat purse just slips in nicely into my bag holding all those loose stuff safely in it's inner space. More electrifying fun colors coming up!!

Batik Table Cloth

Back to batik project. This time this batik Terengganu is from my own collection. I've made a table cloth from a piece of batik sarung. See how beautiful it worked using one design for one side of the tablecloth and the other design for the other side ... and it's from ONE piece of sarung, cool! Machine Embroidery

A new craft which I would like to put my hands on. There's a vast selection of these machines available locally and I can't get enough with their features and functions. Amongst my favorite is Brother's and Singer's. The price can reach RM10k including software for design scanning and generating stitches with the machine. The possibilities of great craft is endless. Hmm ... not sure if I should invest in such a machine for fear that it will be a white elephant.

Picture: Pencil case from jeans fabric and machine embroidered from Haslina, a collector of embroidery sewing machine whom I bumped into unplanned at Bachok, Kelantan. Fun meeting you Na :). The whole embroidery is completed in just 41 minutes and the machine just runs by itself! ... just in time for us to finish our tea.

Sling Bag Wadi

Take a break! After a long stretch of batik bags a slumber sling bag is a wonderful feat for the eyes!

This bag is ordered by Wadi, Hazem's friend. Yes, a boy. He liked the cool shoulder bag Kak Long modeled but that one already went to niece Izzati.

So I made one for him from this wonderful orange 100% cotton fabric and matched it with plain red cotton for the inside lining. Wonderlicious!

As usual, my bags are 100% reversible and so two looks from one bag. How cool is that! He wanted to fit in his science log book and so I sized it even to fit my laptop!! The handle is purposely long to enable cross body wear. Hip alright! Simple, no button, no zipper, no pockets, just a cool bag for a cool boy. (Heard that this will also hold his futsal shoes; boys)

P.S. Still owe Cikgu Minah a toiletries bag. Hm ... haven't found a nice color and fabric combination for her. Her's would be a delicate decision as she is a retired teacher and very gentle person. Hang on there Cikgu Minah. Thank you.

Martha Stewart's Purse

This bag is from Martha Stewart sewing project. Although it is re-sized from the template given, I think it is a little small still. So I'll do a bigger one next time.

This one is 100% reversible and you get two looks from one bag because the inside design is different than the outside. As usual, typical from a sarung of batik Terengganu, one side is cut off from the body of the sarung while the other from the head of the sarung. Still maintaining low cost, no additional fabric as in the Half Moon Bag, nor any interfacing is used. Enjoy.

Vegetable Bag

Surprised? Well the English would call it a Flower Bag. They would put in fresh cuts of lavender and roses flat in these bags from their country garden ye. Well I would use it to place my vegetables when I go the Night Market! So in goes a bundle of Kangkong, Bayam Merah, Lettuce, Tomatoes, Red Chillies and Small Chillies. Enough.

There's only one shot of the bag because even though it is 100% reversible but I made the fabrics and fabric matches the same inside out. Save cost!! Aishah wants it cheap! Hmm... normally I would do different fabric designs inside out so you get value for your money for a two look from one purchase. But sorry folks.

Dark Night Half Moon Bag

This is dark night. Poor soul. Didn't want to show it at first but thought, heck, why not. Worked this one for Hana but felt it's too dark to be fashionable. So Hana you decide.

The fabric is batik Terengganu, maroon floral motif on black background. The handle is black from my voile collection. The handle casing is done slightly wider here but later redone narrower as per earlier hot chocolate. Slightly ripped it while undoing the stitches (e hek.) It again is totally reversible. As I've done it, the inside and the outside are from different parts of the sarong facbric, thus from the different motifs, you can have two totally different look either way you wear it. The bag is interfaced to give it it's half moon form. The handle is interchangeable, but it takes patience to put it through the casing. However, pulling it out is easy. Well the name describes it well. If you like it, let me know.

Hot Chocolate Half Moon Bag

Okay, like it? I love it. This bag, from a maroon floral on black background of batik Terengganu, originally matched with a black voile handle. But the look is too dark that I called it dark night half moon bag. I don't think I'll post it here because it's too gloomy. So I switched the handle with this dark chocolate voile handle and voila, very vogue and sophisticated. Hana, I think you should take this or the earlier twilight bag; or both!!

LA Here I Come - Half Moon Bag

Thought I'd try out this bag. It's kind of glamorous, very Hollywoody, sheek ala Rodeo Drive.

It's shaped almost to a half a circle thus the name half moon bag. Batik Terengganu is used here for both the outside as well as the inside lining. It's reversible!! As you can see one side is from the body of the batik and the other side is from the head of the batik typical design on Batik Sarung.

The handle is quite kinky. Here I used a plain soft fabric in aqua blue - it's actually from my voile collection for a square scarf. The color is perfect to match the batik. And it's just tied together as the handles for a totally airy look. Wear it with one of those large round dark sunglasses. Watch out Angelina Jolie!

Square Bag

Couldn't wait to share this one, it's awesome!!

The bag is normally called a Messenger Bag well I just like to call a square bag.

I'm so excited finishing it after a few wrong doings but completing the project is very satisfying.

I took extra care in getting the floral motifs to line up. As the material is our batik Terengganu I had to make use of the different designs between the kepala kain and the badan kain, then there's the border design.

So the typical kepala kain or lined up triangle shape is used for the bag front. The badan kain is used for the rest of the bag including it's lining. For the handle I used the border and catch the cute turquoise blue flower to align the whole length of the bag handle. Of course the bag is interfaced to give it it's form. The bag has two outside front pockets sized enough to slip in an envelope or two. It has an outside back pocket across the width of the back. For clasping the flap hook and loop is used.

Hmmm.... Love it!

Large Box Toiletries Bag

Similar to my earlier Square Bag I decided to make another one. Only this time it's larger and thougher - I want to use hard interfacing. So as it turned out, it's roomy enough to put my husband's hand tools or I figured his CD collection. He can use it for his toiletries if he doesn't mind the mild floral batik motif. BTW yes this one is also done with our batik Terengganu.

Working with interfacing is tough. Add zippers to it and I am thankful that I wanted this to be larger than the earlier one I did. It would be a though fight to turn the bag inside out and round and round during the workout!!

Feminine Apron with Gathered Skirt and Wide Shoulder Straps

Side track sikit after a few bag projects.

Been wanting to do an apron so with one of Aishah's batik Terengganu I followed my heart desire to make one.

I choose this pattern for it's comfort. The wide shoulder strap is far more comfortable to have on than the usual string straps. The shoulder strap is also attached to the back waist band eliminating the need to pull over one's head with the normal string apron. Furthermore, this one is a bit fancy with gathered skirts for a more flirting look with a modest size bib. It has two large pockets big enough to hold a recipe flip book or other electronic gadgets to take along to the kitchen.

P/S - Pardon the photo shoot. I wanted to have a photo of a person with the apron on to show it's femininity but I don't think any of my boys would want to model it :D

Flat Zippered Purse with Handle

Fell in love with this flat purse when I first saw it at Etsy. Just had to figure out on assembling the pieces so that raw edges are not visible. Well after comparing methods from two tutorials I found at Blogger I kinda mix the methods and voila.

I'm comfortable with the method of doing it, it's just that it's so hard when working with interfacing. For the fabric I used here which is batik Terengganu, the cotton is quite thin so I figured the purse would not have the form which I wanted. So along came the interfacing. But that's just it with interfacing, especially for small projects as this purse where you have to turn in inside out and all over, the hard interfacing just makes it more difficult.

The purse is roomy enough to function as wallet, phone or camera holder. The large, stiff handle is perfect for hanging it to the wrist.

Well the plan is to match these purses to the larger tote bags. Well this one matches my earlier Regular Tote Bag.

Regular Tote Bag

Not so regular as this tote bag is totally reversible!

When working halfway through this project I figured the bag is not going to form very well. You see the fabric used is again our batik Terengganu. I used it for both the inside as well as outside. So the fabric does not hold that well as a big formed bag. To improve it I added interfacing to bottom as well as used interfaced handle.

For the fact that both the inside and outside is from the same fabric, the look is different because I've made used of the different parts of our batik for each side. The side with the triangle motifs is from the "kepala kain". The side with floral motifs is from the "badan kain."

Nice for a regular bag.

P.S. You must be wondering by now why am I working a lot of bags in these batik fabric. Well, they are for Aishah who owns a batik shop and wants to take our batik to a different level. Good luck Aishah.

Sewing Bagsket

Ta da! Sewing Bagsket. Sounds funny eh? Well the original poster named it such, bagsket that is. Well I change it to Sewing Bagsket. Well I change more than just the name.

This bag original design is with a pull string cover. Imagine a container for baby's milk bottle. Well you're right, yuks, I didn't like. I did finish the bag up to that point. It looked pathetic. So I strip open the top part, redo the top edging and voila I got a Sewing Bagsket!

Why sewing basket? Well, the design allows for multiple slots for tools and notions. I used a beautiful ocean light blue satin trimming for the pocket top. So why hide it with the pull string top? And I figured the pockets fits well for scissors, rulers, pens and other sewing paraphernalia. Perfect.

Again, the fabric is our batik Terengganu. This time inside out! I made use of the different prints on the sarung fabric for special effects. It works eh!

This is one is Aishah's. I'd love to have one for myself to stash all my sewing tools and take it around when I'm working on a hand sewing project.

So, for my own sewing bagsket, come back it a short while okay!

Square Tote Bag

Again our beautiful batik Terengganu is used for this project.

This bag is a bit tricky than the others to do. Although it doesn't use any interfacing, sewing on the zipper, bottom tab and top handle requires a lot of patience! Phew! I was glad that I didn't have to undo anything ... except the zippers to open the bag!!

By the way, for the inside lining, I used my all time favourite plain cotton fabric in matching dark chocolate.

Fabric Grocery Bag

Love this bag.

Pattern copied from the widely used supermarket plastic bag, this bag is made totally from 100% cotton fabric. The outside fabric is our lovely batik fabric from Terengganu.

I love this bag as it is very functional. Imagine if you were take a hot pot to a potluck party ... in goes the hot plastic container or our Pyrex casserole into the bag. No worries about handling the hot containers and you would look gorgeous carrying the hot pot in this bag.

Personally, I would like to make one for each of my Pyrex containers so when I go out for picnics or luncheon get together, I'd be happy and ready to transfer my favourite dishes in this lovely Fabric Grocery Bag!

My Tangering Cheetah Bag

Well I finally completed my tangerine cheetah print coool shoulder bag! This time I had to improvise a little bit to accentuate the look - I've added a large press button at the sides so the bags has more rounded edge and look to it. Of Course, with the button undo, the bag is flat and square as Sponge Bob Square Pants!! (and no I did not get inspired by him!!).

Did I mention that the bag is totally reversible?! Well yes, flip it inside out and you have a more rugged looking plain asparagus green (that's thinking of Zynga's FarmVille) bag with a pocket at the side. Now even Ikram (that's my nephew) would want to use this bag for his green shopping at Carrefour!

Still not enticed to own one? More coming and will make you drool like mad.

My Sewing Machine

My Mom's Sewing Machine

December had been a busy month. Well actually the roller coaster started with Raya Haji. Well prior to that we started the stretch of travellings and entertaining by having to pick up Kak Long in Segamat following her semester break. Perks of the trip .. durian Segamat!

Then balik kampung for the Raya Korban .. a week! The rituals of korban as usual was done by our traditional family gotong royong followed by an afternoon barbecue. Nice. On our return we had our nephew staying over. Did I mentioned it rained most of the time. Yep even my sis-in-law's house had a share of the flood in her area.

Na's visit was fun.. karaoke! Then another nephew came. Then we're off to KL. An agonising week, Kak Yah went thru a head operation. Alhamdullilliah she's recovering well. KL was fun to .. bowling, waiting in the hospital, biz meetings, family get together. Best of all I had the opportunity to bring my late mom's (Al-Fatihah) sewing machine to Kuantan. Thankyou to Abang Rashid and thank you to Jiha.

We had Nyah and Co and Hana and geng over. So we had another round of fun ... jamming, karaoke, BBQ, Yong Tau Fu buffet, durian.

Then we had to send Kak Long off again to school. She cried so it was quite a sad moment for all of us.

Now, again, it's just me and the boys.

Thankfully I have my sewing machine and I have my mom's sewing machine!!!

Wah.. just attended a much anticipated event, the birthday party for Tunku Ahmad Ismail and Tunku Afzan 9 year old twins of Tengku Mahkota Pahang and Tunku Azizah Aminah Maimunah Iskandariah, Tengku Puan Pahang.

I was invited as Tengku Puan wishes to meet with members of Stitchers, a club which Tengku Puan herself founded. As the name indicates, Stitchers is a club for enthusiasts of cross stitching. Naturally Sulam Sayang signs in for membership.

Sulam Sayang hopes to share more activities with Tengku Puan and Stitchers in the future.

Shoulder Bag

Hi everyone! I'm so excited with my latest finished project - a shoulder bag!!

Well it's a tote bag - one you can carry a lot of stuffs in it. Like I have keys, phone, purse, coin purse, lipstick, thumb drive, nail clipper, medicine, note book, pens and others I carry around in my bag. And I thought well to include a laptop I need to have a bigger bag. So I started on this project.

Initially I started to work on a red checked bag designed big enough for a laptop. It started well with suggested how-to by Edina with a book reference magazine. But then I stopped midway as my machine had some problems. So into a shoe box went all the materials.

Then this idea came to mind.

I chose a cheetah printed cotton fabric for the bag. For a good finishing, the bag is fully lined with plain black cotton fabric. So it's pretty sturdy to carry books or groceries or stuffs. I plan on offering this bag to others for RM30. Add another RM10 to RM20 if you want it beaded for extra bling-bling.

Can't wait to start on another one with a lighter yellow cheetah print color. Order yours now!!

Magenta and Lilac

Ok. Lama tak create post. This time, again, bead work on baju Na. Again, vibrant floral motif - minat sungguh Na dengan motif ini. Yang lain nya this time is the same floral motif is repeated kat lower body line.

This time also I switched from using pearl beads to rice beads. The triangular shape centers the vibrant floral with darker glass beads as the insides. Triangular vibrant floral buds are then stitched in between the larger vibrant floral motif. Very satisfying. Love the lilac and magenta colour tones.

For your information, magenta is also referred to as fuchsia. Fuchsia is from the electrifying pink tone. Lilac is from the purple tones. On this work the spikes for the vibrant floral motif is in two colors, magenta and dark purple. While the inside triangle made with rice bead is in dark magenta with dark lilac glass bead as the center bead.

When finishing this work, what comes to mind is our Malay tradition - the tradition of fabric design. The half flower design reflects the same motif on our long lasting Songket. The rich and deep color of green brings back to memory those old traditional velvet baju kurung cekak musang. Although baju kurung cekak musang is mainly worn by Minang ladies, as a young girl I used to admire the simplicity yet rich cultural heritage of the dress amongst us Malays in the nusantara. And so I lay down here three pantuns to remind us of our heritage, with a modern twist:

anak cina memancing ikan,

ikan dipancing di muara sungai,

kalau kite sukakan sulaman,

sulamlah bunga bunga teratai

buah pauh buahnya masam,

mari dikait si anak nelayan,

sulam bukan sebarang sulam,

Chocolatey Delicious

Phew siap pun! This is the second selendang for Puan Nurul.

The color selection is to match her baju kurung which is mainly in brown. Five colors were used here.

As per Puan Nurul's requests the stems are in brown. Although there's a lot of turquoise blue on her kurung she however wanted to play it down on the selendang .. so I used the blue for the rose bud ... out of the world!! That's alright coz overall it's gonna match the dress and the colors will blend.

To stick to conventional, I used light pink and dark pink for the bullion roses. Water color red is also on the kurung so that's ok.

She also likes fresh green.. hm... hope this will do.

SO! It looks delicious!! Chocolatey delicious!! MMuahh! Again this selendang project is 100% hand sewn and hand embroidered by Sulam Sayang!

Smooth and Silky, Orange Zest, Long Scarf

Special request, order actually, from Puan Nurul - selendang, long scarf, in natural color, earth tones, that would be simple and sweet looking.

Because of the special size request, my normal kain bawal is square, her order is made using 1.5 m length of my Japanese Voille, peach in color. She favours hand embroidered bullion roses and so the selendang is 100% hand sewn and embroidered. Lovely!!

I wanted a sublime look so I choose color combination in white, orange and yellow highlight. White for the vines, orange for the bullion roses and rose buds, and yellow for the bullion rose highlight. This time the lasy daisy leaves are white in color same with the single seed stitch vines for the suttle and soft look. Edge trimming is simply hand stitched hem. Beautiful.

Baju ni potongan kurung moden. Describe sikit baju ni - leher teluk belanga, no tulang belut just piping, lengannya lurus separuh dan kembang berjerut separuh, tiada kekek yang berasingan tapi bercantum dengan pesak yang dipotong agak ramping di pinggang.

Beadingnya di sekeliling leher depan dan dilanjutkan ke paras bawah dada. Disamping itu, ade beading jugak di bahagian bawah depan. Beading ni agak sarat kerana motif zig-zag di jahit dua lapis, hijau dan biru. Di dalam jahitan lurus zig-zag saya tambah labuci biru di ikat manik coklat. bronze.

Bullion Rose on Buttons

When I put on this shirt this morning I didn't know it's going to end up with bullion roses on it's button. I just had the urge to try the bullion rose bud on a button. From Zue's book A-Z of Bullion which she ordered through Sulam Sayang Amazon Store, I found out how the stitch works with button. Definitely different when working with flat fabric. Even so, there are many ways I found how stitchers hold their fabric, thread and needle to work with bullions. However it is, the finishing gotta be good. Here I used ten rounds of turns for the bud and eight for the leaves. The bud can either be a double or triple bullions. I tested with both. Sweet.

Just Having Fun

To test my skills with various stitches I started to work with alphabets spelling my blog name Sulam Sayang. The fabric is left over from an unfinished kurung project of burgundy japanese voille.

I intended to do the full wording but it's taking too long to complete, so I'm posting it here today anyways.

The design is taken from Ondori Floral Embroidery, not fully. Check out the template at Sulam Sayang DIY. The book did not provide for the letter M so I've improvised N for an M, just add another arch.

Most of the alphabet's outlines are with stem stitches. Some as A uses chain stitch. Filling/shading is done with herringbone stitch - those X'es.

Various other more advance stitches, including satin stitch and bullion, were used for the flowers. Aren't they lovely.

The flowers at S are daffodils. While U are water lilies. The other I'm not sure but A looks very wild. Love 'em.

Projects like this is very good to use up those left over threads. I have many of them, greens and red/pink in various shades, so that really suits projects of floral or plant motifs such as this. Why don't you try it?

These kurungs are Putri's two little daughters'. Had em done following the kids clothing. So my team worked from scratch - tayloring, tulang belut and beading. The dresses are our traditional kurung dresses, one with the normal pesak and the other as per Kurung Pahang with pesak gantung. The girls are gonna be so cute in these. Glamorous for sure!

The fabric is cotton with simple floral motifs in baby blue. We matched the neck stitching with tulang belut in baby blue. And completed the teluk belanga neckline with pearl buttons. Elaborate baby blue bunga tanjung adorns the girls' dresses. White Japanese glass beads vines roam the borders. Baby blue Japanese sequins and glass beads highlight the edging. Hm.. beautiful. A feast to the eye.

Cool Tudung Bawal - 100% Hand Sewn and Hand Embroidered

This color, bead and design combination is for the chique and sophisticated. When Putri a Sulam Sayang visitor said I should do more of this hand embroidered tudung bawal, I decided to start on bawal again. She loves this fabric color from my selections at Sulam Sayang E-Shop, so I started to work on it. I don't know if she wants the tudung for herself, but I hope she does. So Putri I hope u like it enough to purchase :) Call me, I can have it send together with your daughters' kurung. Other wise, it'll be up for sale at Sulam Sayang E-Shop!

When I picked up the fabric from my selections available at Sulam Sayang E-Shop I find it hard to get the correct floss color to match it. Not until I found the beautiful green "stones" in odd shapes for the rose buds did I decided on the matching green floss for the leaves and vines and the duo-pink for the roses. Before that it was to be like brown vines and dark green leaves. It would have been just common. But this - I just love it. The floral motif is just enough to give the elegant yet sophisticated look. The flower arrangement is just nice and just enough not too crowded to give that 3-D effect. Love it! Hm.. just love it!

Sulam Tangan dan Sulam Manik Tudung Bawal

Terbaru! Tudung bawal bersulam tangan dan manik - pattern kuntuman rose, manjalara dan crystal bud. Gabungan ini saya lihat terkini di pasaran tudung bawal Kelantan. Harga mencecah RM160!

Untuk sulaman manik, di sini saya gunakan tiga jenis beads - mauve tubular bead, light purple seed bead dan slightly pink small crystal. Untuk sulaman tangan pula dua jenis jahitan saya gunakan - lazy daisy stitch untuk daun dan bullion stitch untuk rose dwi warna. "Hm geram! Macam nak picit-picit je bunge tu."

Saya sarankan kepada peminat-peminat tudung bawal bersulam, cubalah jahit sendiri. It's very rewarding bila hasil kerja tangan kita tu siap - seperti yang kita idam dan rancangkan.

"Hm. projek tudung dah siap boleh pakai raya ni. Nampaknye, color theme tahun ni purple lah. Boleh gabung dgn silver gray or soft pink."

Basic Chain with Sequin Padding

Looks like pattern basic chain with sequin padding ni telah menarik minat ramai peminat-peminat sulaman manik! Kali ini sequin yang saya gunakan adalah yang size kecil sekali. Jadi sequin padding di jahit pada setiap basic chain. Wah! Of course warnanye adalah warna yang sedondon dengan kain. Kali ini saya pilih warna highlight pada fabric. Bunga pada fabric adalah besar-besar and ada splash in red! So I choose red as my main color on the chains. Disamping itu warna oren dan coklat mendampinginya untuk ia kelihatan lebih interesting. Hasilnya? Tentulah cantik!!

Vibrant Red Florals

These vibrant red florals just burst out from the fabric. The concentric pattern contrasts well with the swirling lines batik design on the silk. The flowers actually have orange tips and medium size pearls. This is a funkier version of Soft White-n-Blue Floral.

Selamat tahun baru 2009!
Wah, lama tak pegang jarum dan menaip kat sini.

So today I'm posting Kak Ani's blouse which she wanted a simple bead lining at sleeves and collar. We liked the combo mix of the deep blue glass beads and the tiny baby blue pearls. (Had to let the floral sequins go Kak Ani as I didn't like the tone, sorry.)

Ni orang kata is "jalinan kasih" ye? Anyway, its your basic stem stitch with alternating beads and pearls. Sweet. Although I would like to add a dash of almond green to go with the fabric. Alas. Can't find the color.

Lembut dan menawan rupenye yek? Kalau pakai tidur ni mesti lena dan mimpi yang indah.

BTW, I'm working on a lot of fantastic projects for my niece, Na. No new designs but watch out for some fantastic colors. See you soon!!

Soft White-n-Blue Floral

This is a collaboration work between Mok Su Zana and myself on Kak Yan's baju kurung. I'm just finishing off the floral motif MSZ started. She will add manik tabur both at sleeve and neck edges. Cantik.

I'm kind of worried if the long stitches would get tanggled with the wearer's jewelleries like bracelet, wrist watch, bangle and tudung and necklace. Because of the design, the stitches are just going outlet from the central pearl bead, no criss-crossing at the back. hm...

Eventhough not finished, just wanted to share it with you here. Enjoy.

Sulam tangan bersama Sulam Sayang!!

Sediakan payung sebelum hujan

I started this project together with Kak Zah's Bunga Sekuin baju kurung. Found this suitable umbrella at a local emporium and couldn't resist it. Always wanted to try this danglings either on table runner or curtains! Found the pattern in a book and got myself some suitable beads for the umbrella (ella, ella, hey, hey, hey....)

The project kinda halted when I ran out of the small hexagonal beads and unfortunately my bead shop no longer carry the size - had to order, "besok sampai lo." The next week - "minggu depan lo." Then - "belum lagi loh!" "Alamak!"

Then Kak Cik's wedding came into the calendar and she wanted to use the umbrella during the event. Belum siap lah! I had to find the beads and fortunately found some in a small shop in Wakaf Bharu! Jahit punya jahit, sampai the night before the wedding - still tak siap!! Puhh.

So today, I decided to publish this post just because...

(From the looks of it, my posts are getting creamy and creamier yea? What to do. All the latest projects are either white or cream. )

Anyway, the umbrella looks very romantique and fairy tailish. You should try to be under it. Hm.. good for day dreaming or wishful thinking as if .....

Give me light

You must have figured by now that I'm getting bored with all this already. Acquiring new skill is most satisfying. Once attained, it drags you down again. So I'm seeking a new skill again.

A lot of sewing ideas came to mind - pajama pants, pot pourri pouches, draperies. So I decided to visit a local fabric store to check out some fabrics for my new projects. RM2.80 per meter with small flower prints cotton is good for my pajama pants. Further up along the way, found some remnants in the draperies section. RM8.00 per meter white checked organza with fine silver and gold lines. Perfect day curtain for the boys' room. This back room needs more light as it faces west, sun down and the current white thick curtains helps a little but not much to bring in natural day light. So I'm set to my sewing machine.

Completed the pajama pants and their great - comfortable, snuggly and soft. Haven't taken any pictures yet and it's in the washer. Maybe I'll make a few and sell them here on-line. Anybody interested? It will be cheap and comfortable. Wear it with a t-shirt to sleep and I promise you you'll sleep well in them. Wait a couple more days okay and I'll post it out for sale!!

Completed the curtain - yeah very nice. The room is much brighter and beautiful. More comfortable and the boys love it. Yeah!!

The curtain photo taken from the doorway did not come out with good result coz there's too much light from the outside of the window. Too much light for photography that is. But very good light for the room.

So I've taken a closer shot on the one at the doorway to show the fabric. Yeah!!

Beautiful! You see, the sales assistant said I'd need 3 pieces of 2 meters for the whole window. So, in order to have a perfect finishing I put all three together. Then I found it's too wide for the window. So, I took off one part, finish the other two together, and make the one part for the door! Voila..

Be your own taylor. Get yourself a Baju Kurung

Ever wonder the effort and spending when it's the time of year when you need a new baju kurung? Chances are it will be two months before raya or for a big wedding or special event. You plan to get yourself a baju kurung. Off you go to your favourite fabric store. Masses of fabric, silk, chiffon, rayon, cotton in a myriad of colors. Okay, so you've made your selection, 4 meters of fabric you feel suitable for your celebration. Maybe it had cost you a good RM80 to RM200. Now off to the tailor. She'll take your measurement and it will be ready a week before raya. It will cost you from RM40 to RM60 for tailoring the fabric into a baju kurung. There would be other cost incurred as you made your way thru Jln Tunku Abdul Rahman or where ever that you shop and back. Plus you need to wade your way to your tailor - at a makcik's place at Kampung Bharu or wherever. Then of course a matching tudung! So back to Jln Tunku Abdul Rahman for a tudung bawal. This may cost you RM55 to RM175!! So I'm providing you a short cut solution. Read on.

I have this friend tailor who sews the best fitting baju kurung in the world. She has been sewing mine for a good 10 years and I still go to her to get my baju kurung done. She operates from her house. Previously, she had a store but following a year of bad flood she had to close shop. Her cutting and sewing is so good you rasa terletak je!! Must I say more. So what's the deal? Read on.

Here at this site, I'm offering you fabric, sewing, jahit tulang belut and bead embroidery (if required) services and delivery (pos laju) right to your door - your baju kurung. "Wuoo... macam mana tu?" you might ask. You choose the fabric from our collection, trust me on this one. (We will build our collection of quality fabric at our e-shop!) You give me your measurement, and I'll send you your baju kurung right to your door!! "What kind of measurement?" For this you have to get yourself a measuring tape. Gi borrow from your mom, or sis or your neighbour if you don't have one. Dah ada dah? Now pull out one of your best fit baju kurung. Read on.

Lay the baju kurung flat on the floor. Start taking measurement. First, the shoulder width, from side to side. Forget about seam allowance, get the exact measurement. Second, the sleeve length. Third, the sleeve width. Fourth, the dress length. Fifth, the dress widest width at bottom, side to side including the pesak. For the kain, measure the waist, hip and length.

Give us two to four weeks and ding dong you get your baju kurung.

Or, if you biasa beli baju siap and comfortable with the standard size, just choose from the available sizes. We will suggest a matching tudung to go with the kurung.

Wedding Anniversary Gift

Today we celebrated my son Hazem's 14th birthday. We don't do this for the sake of celebrating his birthday per say. Rather, we took the event and make it an excuse to buy and eat a cake, a little fancy cooking and get presents. This time we had a crave for cheesecake, so the birthday cake is Oreo Cheese! Fancy cooking? Grilled lamp chop, french fries, chicken macaroni salad, and sweet corn. Presents? Clothings that he needs - track pants, t-shirt, slippers and a cap. We added remote control racing car we got as a free gift while out shopping at the East Coast Mall. So nothing really with my Sulam Sayang trademark.

However, we did get something out of Sulam Sayang collection for Rozie our next door neighbour. She and hubby consider the children their own. What a neighbour. It's their wedding anniversary - don't know the "th". So the perfect gift for her was a beaded purple songket purse and purple crystal bracelets in two different tones.

Upgrade Old Tudung

I bet everyone of us have lots of old tudung either outdated or just not suitable for our current lifestyle. My sis used to have a rattan basket, medium size, full of tudung of all colors and material. I store mine in my lower dresser, and that's just the ones I no longer wear. I have another stack in my dress cupboard, the current ones I'm using.

The one I'm going to share here is from my lower dresser. It is a simple and inexpensive coral blue machined embroidered not so nice bawal tudung. As I rubble through the pile I found it suitable for my upgrade project. Here's the resulting upgrade.... neat.....
