Sulam Forever

And I thought those days are gone. When tudung bawal bersulam tangan or just tudung bawal would no longer be worn. With the tudung segera over flooding the tudung market in Malaysia, or Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei, the square voile scarf is less favoured by local Muslim ladies.

Even if chiffon long scarf is still favoured among teenagers as per the wearing by Yuna, their elders are now favouring the earlier called tudung ekin. Well I'm happy that in the midst of all the bright colored Lycra instant scarf, my service is sought after.

Here I'm starting with simple design using basic stitches for a suttle decorative for the instant scarf. A new twist to the tudung here the fabric used is velvet and it's only for the awning. The tudung body will still be Lycra.

Happy to work with you Kak Imah and looking forward to your continuous need and success for your tudung business.

Chocolatey Delicious

Phew siap pun! This is the second selendang for Puan Nurul.

The color selection is to match her baju kurung which is mainly in brown. Five colors were used here.

As per Puan Nurul's requests the stems are in brown. Although there's a lot of turquoise blue on her kurung she however wanted to play it down on the selendang .. so I used the blue for the rose bud ... out of the world!! That's alright coz overall it's gonna match the dress and the colors will blend.

To stick to conventional, I used light pink and dark pink for the bullion roses. Water color red is also on the kurung so that's ok.

She also likes fresh green.. hm... hope this will do.

SO! It looks delicious!! Chocolatey delicious!! MMuahh! Again this selendang project is 100% hand sewn and hand embroidered by Sulam Sayang!

P.S. tok leh bubuh gambar penuh. nanti ore tiru ... sorriii

Smooth and Silky, Orange Zest, Long Scarf

Special request, order actually, from Puan Nurul - selendang, long scarf, in natural color, earth tones, that would be simple and sweet looking.

Because of the special size request, my normal kain bawal is square, her order is made using 1.5 m length of my Japanese Voille, peach in color. She favours hand embroidered bullion roses and so the selendang is 100% hand sewn and embroidered. Lovely!!

I wanted a sublime look so I choose color combination in white, orange and yellow highlight. White for the vines, orange for the bullion roses and rose buds, and yellow for the bullion rose highlight. This time the lasy daisy leaves are white in color same with the single seed stitch vines for the suttle and soft look. Edge trimming is simply hand stitched hem. Beautiful.

Another one for Puan Nurul is coming up soon!! Happy Sewing and Happy Beading!!!

P.S. Visit Sulam Sayang E-Shop for exciting new colors from my Bawal No. 1 collection.

Cool Tudung Bawal - 100% Hand Sewn and Hand Embroidered

This color, bead and design combination is for the chique and sophisticated. When Putri a Sulam Sayang visitor said I should do more of this hand embroidered tudung bawal, I decided to start on bawal again. She loves this fabric color from my selections at Sulam Sayang E-Shop, so I started to work on it. I don't know if she wants the tudung for herself, but I hope she does. So Putri I hope u like it enough to purchase :) Call me, I can have it send together with your daughters' kurung. Other wise, it'll be up for sale at Sulam Sayang E-Shop!

When I picked up the fabric from my selections available at Sulam Sayang E-Shop I find it hard to get the correct floss color to match it. Not until I found the beautiful green "stones" in odd shapes for the rose buds did I decided on the matching green floss for the leaves and vines and the duo-pink for the roses. Before that it was to be like brown vines and dark green leaves. It would have been just common. But this - I just love it. The floral motif is just enough to give the elegant yet sophisticated look. The flower arrangement is just nice and just enough not too crowded to give that 3-D effect. Love it! Hm.. just love it!

Sulam Tangan dan Sulam Manik Tudung Bawal

Terbaru!

"Hm geram! Macam nak picit-picit je bunge tu."

Saya sarankan kepada peminat-peminat tudung bawal bersulam, cubalah jahit sendiri. It's very rewarding bila hasil kerja tangan kita tu siap - seperti yang kita idam dan rancangkan.

"Hm. projek tudung dah siap boleh pakai raya ni. Nampaknye, color theme tahun ni purple lah. Boleh gabung dgn silver gray or soft pink."

Selamat Bersulam!!

In perfecting my rose motif, I've seeked high and low in the internet for pictures and techniques. Found a beautiful alphabet work with floral motifs at Flickr and flowers from gardens on a book cover at Amazon. This motif ,English Rose and Sleek Lavender, is from the works of Diana Lampe. Check it out at my new Sulam Sayang Amazon Store.

The voile is from my quality Japan Full Voile collection. The color is peach. Beautiful color to set the background for this English Rose Garden theme.

Upgrade Old Tudung

I bet everyone of us have lots of old tudung either outdated or just not suitable for our current lifestyle. My sis used to have a rattan basket, medium size, full of tudung of all colors and material. I store mine in my lower dresser, and that's just the ones I no longer wear. I have another stack in my dress cupboard, the current ones I'm using.

The one I'm going to share here is from my lower dresser. It is a simple and inexpensive coral blue machined embroidered not so nice bawal tudung. As I rubble through the pile I found it suitable for my upgrade project. Here's the resulting upgrade.... neat.....

Now you can get the berlian strings from Sulam Sayang E-Shop.

Tudung Bawal Hand Sewn and Embroidered (TBHSE)

Hi embroidery fans.

I'm working on my first line of tudung bawal Hand Sewn and Embroidered (HSE). The collection will be in pastel colors - warm pink, lilac, sand brown and light yellow.
The decorative embroidery will be small flower motif at borders. The flower motifs will be rose buds, lavender, tinkerbells and other small flower motifs along border from front to back.

As the collection is Hand Sewn and Embroidered, the edging will be the traditional pull and tied with slip stich inside edging.

The collection will use Full Japanese Voille, very fine bawal with beautiful soft colors.

The collection is open for grabs. It is priced at RM55 a piece (not including postage.) Interested in owning one of these exclusive Tudung Bawal by Sulam Sayang order now. Call 019-9846026 or email norazihan@yahoo.com now.

Tudung Bawal Bling-Bling

Alhamdulllillah siap tiga tudung. I'm getting better and faster at doing this. I wonder how fast people that produce these tudung to sell do it. Now a days kat pasar malam people are offering 25 ringgit for a tudung (not sure of bawal and belian kualiti.) How much can they make.

Puas hati tengok hasil tangan 100%.

My First 100% Handsewn and Embroidered Bawal Head Scarf

I've finally finished the edging for my tudung bawal from my embroidery class last week. It really takes patience and preserverance to finish one of these. No wonder they sell at such a high price.

Well, the scarf I worked on at the class was of a Bawal No. 1 A in dark pink color. Datin yang also present at the workshop said my scarf is the color of Belacan (prawn paste!) "Nice but rarely chosen." Memang I ni jenis yang tak suka kepada warna-warna yang terang. In picking up clothes or fabrics mesti color yang gelap-gelap.

Anyways, I proceed to do this flower using technique pusing benang kat jarum. I call these daisies. I also learnt to do rose bud, full blown rose, sunflower, flat side rose (like picture from earlier post), and other stiches for leaves and branches. Bah is great at doing this. You would think the stiching is done delicately, you should see Bah pulling the threads strong to form the flowers.

For the front edging, Datin ajar how to the traditional way i.e. technique pick and pull as I call it. This edging reminds me of those seprah (alas makan) from those days. But I still use seprah on my dining table as they are small and easily replaced and washed - very convenient. For the inside edging the finishing is just slip stitch.

Kursus Sulaman Kain Tudung

Hi everyone! I'm back from attending an embroidery course for head scarf in Kota Bharu, Kelantan.

The seven days workshop was sponsored by the Sultanah Kelantan, held at the Muzeum Kelantan. More than twenty participants from all districts of Kelantan were happy to attend and learn embroidery from a young embroider brought all the way from Southern Thailand Ms Habibah. I attended only three classes due to other commitment.

Thank you Ros of Pejabat Tanah Tumpat for including myself in the wonderful course.
